Prof. Baylie Damtie Yeshita

Oulu, Finland – 15 November 2025 | Prof. Baylie Damtie Yeshita, Vice Chancellor of Kepler College, has been named the University of Oulu’s 26th Alum of the Year.

Founded in 1958 in Finland, the University of Oulu is an international science university that creates new knowledge, well-being, and innovations for the future through research and education.

The recognition celebrates his journey as a Doctor of Space Physics, a pioneer of higher education in Africa, and a champion of equitable, skills-based learning. Prof. Baylie’s academic path spans Ethiopia and the Nordic region, culminating in a PhD from the University of Oulu in 2004 and research work at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory.

Reflecting on his transformative years in Finland, Prof. Baylie notes how living in the Arctic reshaped his worldview. From experiencing the midnight sun to cycling across Oulu, those years sparked ideas he later carried into his leadership and community work, including inspiring the development of broader cycling routes in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

While responding to the recognition, Prof. Baylie said: I am honored to be named the University of Oulu’s 26th Alum of the Year. This honor also celebrates the outstanding achievements of my colleagues in Rwanda, who contributed to the establishment and remarkable growth of Kepler College, as well as my colleagues in Ethiopia, who worked tirelessly with me to transform Bahir Dar University into a major research institution during my tenure as President. Together, we have expanded opportunities for thousands of young people through higher education and upskilling programs in both countries.”

Today, as Vice Chancellor of Kepler College, Prof. Baylie continues to unlock human potential by leading an institution dedicated to expanding access to high-quality education and fostering pathways to meaningful employment across the continent.
